Gunmen Kill 8 in S. African Family
SHARPEVILLE, South Africa — Gunmen burst into a township house south of Johannesburg on Sunday, herded family members into one room and killed eight of them, relatives of the dead said.
One 19-year-old woman survived the massacre in Sharpeville township. Her uncle, Albinas Lefhiedi, said family members were activists of the African National Congress and he suspected the rival Inkatha Freedom Party was behind the killing. He said the youngest victim was 6 years old.
Residents said ANC sympathizers had attacked and killed a suspected Inkatha member after the murders early Sunday.
