Gulseth’s 2 Slams Doom SDSU
New Mexico sophomore Mark Gulseth hit two grand-slam home runs Sunday, knocking in 10 runs, as the Lobos defeated San Diego State, 13-5, in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game.
The 6-foot-4 first baseman from Callaway, Minn., hit homers with the bases loaded in each of the first two innings off Aztec starter and loser Rob Calloway (1-4).
Gulseth, a .325 hitter, also had a two-run single in the fifth inning off reliever Clint Borman, and he singled again in the seventh to go four-for-five on the afternoon. His two grand slams and 10 RBIs were team records. The WAC record for RBIs in a game is 13 and the NCAA record is 14.
San Diego State (30-10) is leading the WAC with a conference record of 12-3, while New Mexico (22-20-1, 9-7) is in fourth place in the WAC.
The Aztecs got two hits each from Brad Gennaro and Brent Ferguson. Gennaro, a St. Augustine alumnus, homered with none on in the fifth inning, his sixth of the year.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diegans Angela Rock and Karolyn Kirby faced bad weather and a long rain delay but had an easy time defeating Janice Harrer and Elaine Roque, 15-6, to win the $50,000 Coors Light Fort Myers Open beach tournament.
Officials waited for over an hour before the final match. When the weather broke, Rock and Kirby jumped out to a 9-4 lead on the hard-packed, rain-soaked sand. Rock and Kirby took home $11,750 and their first tournament title of the 1992 season. Harrer and Roque received $8,750.
