San Diego : ESCONDIDO : 18-Year-Old Faces Trial as an Adult
An 18-year-old who will be tried as an adult for the fatal drive-by shooting of an Escondido honors student was arraigned Monday in San Diego Municipal Court.
Luis Montoya, who was just one month shy of his 18th birthday when he allegedly gunned down Orange Glen High School student Manuel Audelo last year, will have a preliminary hearing May 12.
In the May 27 shooting, Montoya also allegedly wounded Audelo’s girlfriend and his younger brother. After the shooting that night, Montoya’s mother, Bertha Naranjo, helped him flee to Mexico, but he later turned himself in to police.
Last August, Naranjo was sentenced to 270 days in jail for aiding her son’s escape. Montoya is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
