‘Black Choreographers’ Events

The third “Black Choreographers Moving Toward the 21st Century” festival presents a six-part program in the Wadsworth Theater nightly at 8 tonight through Saturday. A matinee is scheduled for Sunday at 2.

The program features two Los Angeles-based artists: Karen McDonald (“Moving Towards the Path of Enlightenment,” performed by New Age Dance Workshop) and Daryll Stokes (“Baciagulupo,” performed by Electrotonus).

Artists from New York: soloist Maia Claire Garrison (“( ),” performed by the choreographer), Donald Byrd (“Drastic Cuts (Quartet Section),” performed by Byrd/The Group), Milton Myers (“Pacing,” performed by Dallas Black Dance Theatre) and Anthony Marshall (the solo “In His Name,” performed by Kevin Jeff, artistic director of Jubilation Dance Company).

A panel at 6 p.m. on Saturday examines “Tradition and Innovation: Afrocentric and Eurocentric Perspectives.” Participants include Byrd, photographer Lyle Ashton Harris and performance artists Keith Antar Mason and Akilah Nayo Oliver.

On Sunday a noon panel discusses “The Arts as a Catalyst for Community Survival and Revitalization.” Participants include poet Wanda Coleman, Santeria priest Yasamur Flores, Watts Towers Executive Director John Outterbridge, filmmaker Segun Oyekunle and L.A. Festival Artistic Director Peter Sellars.
