WOODLAND HILLS : More Money Set Aside for Rail Study

The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission on Wednesday approved an additional $63,900 for a study of the environmental impact of a proposed monorail over the Ventura Freeway.

The unanimous vote increased to $270,900 the amount allocated for a report on the proposed rail line, which would run along the freeway’s southern shoulder from the planned Universal City Metro Rail subway station to Warner Center in Woodland Hills.

The additional money was needed to analyze several concerns raised during a 90-day public comment period on a draft of the environmental study. Residents questioned whether the project, scheduled to be completed by the year 2001, would displace a fire station and block left turns on a section of Canoga Avenue near Warner Center.

Opponents of the monorail also have argued that the rail line would worsen noise and traffic problems as well as be a visual blight.
