91X Suspends Its Morning Team for Playing Clay Tape
SAN DIEGO — XTRA-FM (91X) indefinitely suspended the “Berger and Prescott” morning show Thursday morning, after the team aired a barely edited, obscenity-laced Andrew Dice Clay routine.
“We feel it was very poor judgment on their part,” said Mike Glickenhaus, 91X executive vice president and station manager.
Glickenhaus said the morning team--Mike Berger, Jeff Prescott and Russ T. Nailz--had been warned in the past about racy material. All three were suspended for airing the routine from Clay’s new album, which covered a wide variety of subjects, including comedian Jay Leno and homosexuals.
“They didn’t do a good job of editing the bit, and I thought it was totally inappropriate and tasteless,” Glickenhaus said.
Advertisers reportedly have complained in the past about the risque material. Glickenhaus said no decision has been made on the future of the team.
Contacted Thursday afternoon, Nailz said the suspension was “probably harsh,” but that management “needed to let us know that this can’t happen.”
Nailz said he hopes and expects that the team will return to the air on 91X.
“I know I’ve been told before to tone it down, and we were,” Nailz said. “I think there was bad editing on that piece and some bad judgment, and it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
