SIMI VALLEY : Residents to Pick Up Trash Near Channel
More than 100 Ventura County residents are expected on Saturday to scour a three-mile stretch of the Arroyo Simi flood control channel in Simi Valley for plastic bags, paper and other debris.
Residents will pick up litter in and along the channel between Madera Road and Sycamore Street in an effort coordinated by a citizens group called the Arroyo Simi Aquatic Preservation Committee and by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Parks District.
The purpose of the annual cleanup, which was first held last spring, is to improve the appearance of the Arroyo Simi and to make it a more hospitable wildlife habitat, said organizer Janet Murphy, a member of the preservation committee.
Ground squirrels, lizards, snakes and birds such as great blue herons and kingfishers are among the animals that have been seen in and along the Arroyo Simi, she said.
Last year, about 100 cleanup participants collected enough trash to fill about 10 dumpsters, Murphy said.
People interested in participating should meet at 8:30 a.m. at Rancho Simi Community Park, 1765 Royal Ave. for registration.
