PREP TRACK : Brix Goes a Long Way to Lead University’s Upset of Woodbridge
Tanja Brix won the 1,600 meters and 3,200 to lead host University to a 71-56 victory over Woodbridge in a Sea View League girls’ track and field meet, ending the Warriors 44-meet winning streak.
Andrea Bill won the shotput (40 feet one-half inch) and discus throw (123-7) for University. Holliday Molway won two sprint events and Wendy Brown won two jumping events for Woodbridge (3-1).
In another Sea View League girls’ track and field meet:
Corona del Mar 90, Saddleback 39--Megan Upham won the 100 and 200 meters and ran the first leg for the winning 1,600-meter relay team for Corona del Mar (1-3 in league).
In Century league girls’ track and field:
Canyon 84, Santa Ana Valley 31--Kim Nelson took the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 for Canyon (3-0).
El Modena 75, Orange 47--Jamie Shine (100, 220) and Rebekah Sheeley (triple jump, 110 hurdles) were double winners for El Modena (6-1, 3-0).
Foothill 72, Villa Park 54--Freshman Tara Oettinger won the 220 and long jump for the Knights (4-1, 3-1). Freshman Megan Reppe took the 100 and triple jump for Villa Park (1-6, 1-3).
In Empire League girls’ track and field:
Esperanza 74, El Dorado 53--Shelia Filsinger (100-meter hurdles, triple jump), Kristy Kierulff (high jump, long jump) and Kelly Wellington (shotput, discus) each won two events for the Aztecs (4-0).
Katella 86, Loara 36--Kim Flading won the 100 hurdles and long jump for visiting Katella (3-1 in league). Loara is 0-4 in league.
In Freeway League girls’ track and field:
Sonora 86, Buena Park 39--Casie Lozano won the 100 and 200 meters for host Sonora (7-1, 4-0).
In Garden Grove League girls’ track and field:
Los Amigos 65, Rancho Alamitos 62--Rosa Nua won the shotput and discus for Los Amigos (4-2).
In Orange League girls’ track and field:
Brea-Olinda 95, Magnolia 31--Heidi Allred won the 100 and 200 meters and the long jump for host Brea-Olinda (5-5, 3-1).
Anaheim 67, Savanna 52--Elide Ocampo and Patty Chau each won three events to help give Anaheim (1-5, 1-3) its first victory in at least three years.
In Pacific Coast League girls’ track and field:
Century 70, Costa Mesa 59--Lucinda Watson won the 100 (12.6) and 200 (27.4) and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team for the host Centurions (2-2).
Laguna Hills 80, Estancia 41--Carrie Appel won the 880 (2:33.3) and mile (5:38.5) for Estancia (3-3, 3-1), but Laguna Hills (4-0) remained undefeated in league.
In South Coast League girls’ track and field:
El Toro 72, Dana Hills 55--Adara Newidouski won the shotput (33-5) and discus (121-6) for the host Dolphins (2-2).
Irvine 77, San Clemente 49--Jennifer Gillis (800, 1,600) and Jessica Bullock (long jump, triple jump) were double winners for Irvine (1-5, 1-3).
Mission Viejo 92, Capistrano Valley 35--Andrea Dean won the 100 meters in 12.6 and the 100-meter hurdles in 16.1 for Mission Viejo (4-0).
In Sunset league girls’ track and field:
Marina 72, Westminster 58--Lisa Tamamasui won the shot and discus and Jill Morton won the 100 and 200 meters for the Lions.
Edison 76, Fountain Valley 51--The Chargers (5-0) prevailed in a meet between the league’s top two teams, as Shelley Taylor cruised to victories in the 800 and 1,600. Fountain Valley’s Elinor Tolson dominated the sprints (winning the 100 and 200 and anchoring the winning 400 relay).
In Century league boys’ track and field:
El Modena 89, Orange 42--Ernie Wilson won the 100- and 220-yard dashes and Brett Pease (880, mile) and Raphael Allen (440, 120 hurdles) were also double winners for El Modena (6-0-1, 2-0-1).
Villa Park 69, Foothill 67--Phil Sitner won the two-mile for the visiting Spartans (5-1-1, 2-1-1).
In Empire League boys’ track and field:
Esperanza 95, El Dorado 27--Jeff Swanson won the 110-meter hurdles (16.2) and 300-meter hurdles (43.3) and sophomore Jimmy Stewart took the discus (150-0) for the Aztecs (4-0).
Katella 84, Loara 52--Ed Presbury won the 100, 200 and 400 for host Loara (3-3, 1-3). Katella is 3-3, 3-1.
In Freeway League boys’ track and field:
Sonora 85, Buena Park 40--Freshman Jose Gonzalez won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Ricardo Castro won the shotput and discus for the host Raiders (6-2, 4-0).
In Orange League boys’ track and field:
Brea-Olinda 115, Magnolia 21--Sophomore Carl Daucher ran the 3,200 meters in 10:12.22 for the host Wildcats (8-2, 4-0).
In Pacific Coast League boys’ track:
Century 123, Costa Mesa 13--Calvin Marshall won the 110 hurdles (16.2), high jump (6-5), long jump (20-1) and triple jump (40-4 1/2) for Century (7-0, 4-0).
In Sea View League boys’ track and field:
Saddleback 86, Corona del Mar 46--Jason Boyce jumped 22-3 1/2 in the long jump to break Todd Bearbower’s 1984 Corona del Mar record by a half-inch. Boyce also won the 100 and 200.
In South Coast League boys’ track and field:
Dana Hills 105, El Toro 31--Rob Crummel won the 200, 400 and ran legs on the host Dolphins’ (3-1) winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams. Teammate Ho Pak won the long jump (21-6 1/2) and triple jump (42-6 1/2) and Ryan Crane took the 110 and 300 hurdles.
Irvine 76, San Clemente 60--John Orduna (100, 200) and John Peck (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) were double winners for host Irvine (2-4, 2-2).
Mission Viejo 81 , Capistrano Valley 55--Anthony Ramirez won the 100 meters (10.9), the 200 meters (22.5) and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team for Mission Viejo (4-0).
In Sunset league boys’ track and field:
Fountain Valley 94, Edison 41--Brian Bivens won the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.2) and anchored both winning relay teams and Matt Gwaltney won all three jump events for the Barons (5-0).
Westminster 73, Marina 62--Christian Moore won the 100 and 200 and Bill Voorhees the 1,600 and 3,200 for the host Lions (4-2). Tony Parrish won the long jump and the triple jump for Marina.
