Top scholars from Newport Harbor High School and Corona del Mar High School were recognized and presented with gifts from the Commodores Club last week in a decades-old tradition of honoring Newport Beach’s best students.

The club, a part of the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce, annually presents awards to the top 15 scholars from both high schools in the city, and later in the year also honors the top athletes.

“Often, they’re the same kids,” said Barbara de Boom, a director at the chamber.

The students were honored Friday at special breakfast ceremonies, where the high school principals listed the accomplishments of each recipient.

Each of the 30 scholars was given a thesaurus personally embossed with the student’s name. The books are intended to be reminders of the students’ accomplishments and something that they will “take to college with them,” said de Boom.

In all, 17 girls and 13 boys were honored this year.

The Commodores Club, which is 31 years old, regularly supports boating events in Newport Beach, and hosts and participates in various community service events.
