WASHINGTON INSIGHT

AS TOM PUT IT . . .: George Bush has a new main man to quote. That would be Thomas Jefferson, who is considered the father of the Democratic Party. Bush says this one shows Jefferson would support term limitations: “With frequent changes, laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. . . . Institutions must advance also to keep pace with my times.” Bush borrowed a 1779 quote--”To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical”--when endorsing limitations on organized labor’s political contributions.
