Myanmar Junta Frees Seven More Dissidents
YANGON, Myanmar — The government announced the release of seven more political prisoners Sunday as part of a liberalization begun last week with the resignation of the junta’s chairman.
On Saturday, the government freed former Prime Minister U Nu and 11 other prisoners and also said it would allow family members to visit Aung San Suu Kyi, the detained pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
State-run radio said the political prisoners released Sunday included the secretary of the National League for Democracy, Chit Khaing, and four other members of the party’s central committee. Suu Kyi is a leader of the party, Burma’s leading opposition group.
