Nine motorcyclists who attended the 24-hour Le Mans motorcycle race were killed in three accidents that took place outside the competition. Fifty other people were injured, officials said.
George Sarre, Secretary of State for Road Transport, said that four of the victims were shown to have illegal amounts of alcohol in their systems for driving.
