BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Terry to Undergo Surgery Again

Scott Terry, a relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, will undergo surgery for a torn rotator cuff and will miss the remainder of the season. It’s the third consecutive season Terry, 32, has required surgery and the latest injury could be career-threatening, Cardinal Manager Joe Torre said. Terry, a right-hander who started the season on the disabled list, also could have a ruptured tendon in his biceps, Torre said. Terry was 4-4 with a 2.80 ERA last year in 65 appearances. He is 24-28 with a 3.73 ERA in his career. . . . The Pittsburgh Pirates might be nearing a four-year, $20-million deal with former Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek. General Manager Ted Simmons, with the Pirates in Chicago on Sunday, said he has concluded negotiations with Drabek’s agents, Randy and Alan Hendricks. Simmons has passed on a proposal to board chairman Douglas Danforth, who must approve all such deals. Simmons said he has recommended a four-year deal with Drabek, the Cy Young Award winner after his 22-6 season in 1990.

Philadelphia rookie right-hander Andy Ashby fractured a bone at the base of his right thumb when he was hit by a line drive and will miss a minimum of two months. Mackey Sasser of the New York Mets lined a pitch off Ashby’s hand in the fourth inning of Philadelphia’s 5-4 victory.
