BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Bailes Eliminates Any Guesswork
No one told Scott Bailes Sunday he had officially been activated off the disabled list. “I just assumed it when they sent Scott Lewis out,” Bailes said.
He assumed correctly. And Manager Buck Rodgers didn’t waste any time getting Bailes some work, inserting the left-hander into the game in time to benefit from the team’s eighth-inning rally and get credit for the 7-5 victory over the Mariners.
“I tell you, this team so far has impressed me,” said Bailes (1-0), who gave up one hit and struck out one in two innings. “Even when we’re down, we come back and score runs. It’s nice to know if you go out and put up a couple of zeros late in the game, we have a good chance to come back.”
Lewis, optioned to triple-A Edmonton after Saturday’s game, “ran out of reprieves,” Rodgers said. Lewis had an 11.12 earned-run average as a reliever but a 3.00 ERA as a starter.
Right fielder Von Hayes left Sunday’s game after 8 1/2 innings because of an injured left hamstring. Hayes will be re-examined today to determine whether the muscle was pulled or merely cramping. . . . Gary Gaetti struck out in his first three at-bats Sunday and was 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position before his eighth-inning triple. . . . Julio Valera is scheduled to make his second start Saturday at Cleveland. Valera (1-1) has made one start--a solid performance in a 3-2 loss at Texas April 15--and one relief appearance. He’ll take the spot of Don Robinson, who’s on the disabled list because of a sore hip. “As long as I’m here, I don’t care if I start or relieve,” Valera said. “Whatever they say, I’ll be ready.”
Pitching coach Marcel Lachemann will represent the Angels Tuesday at the funeral of bench coach Deron Johnson, who died of lung cancer Thursday at age 53. Angel players collected $1,000 to be donated in Johnson’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Lachemann will rejoin the Angels Wednesday in Toronto.
