National Technical Posts Loss for Quarter, Year

National Technical Systems Inc. posted a $591,000 loss for its fiscal fourth quarter ended Jan. 31, compared with a year-earlier profit of $92,000.

The Calabasas-based provider of testing and technical services for industrial and defense markets said the loss came on a 10% decline in its revenue, to $10 million from $11.1 million a year earlier.

The deficit resulted not only from a $287,000 loss on continuing operations, but also from a $304,000 shortfall on its discontinued lines, namely an engineering-services unit that was abandoned in January.

For its full fiscal year, National Technical lost $329,000, compared with a profit of $762,000 the prior year. Annual revenue rose 22% to $41.1 million from $33.8 million.
