Reroute the Bikeway Funds
Instead of designing and constructing a 16-mile-long bikeway between downtown Los Angeles and North Hollywood at an estimated cost of $5.1 million, as reported in “L. A. Seeks Funds for Commuter Bikeway” (Times Valley Edition, March 19), taxpayers could get more bang for their bucks and cyclists more safe miles for their rides if the $5.1 million were used to mark off with paint dedicated bicycle lanes on the hundreds of miles of existing streets.
Not only would this be more cost-efficient, probably not exhausting the total amount quoted, but it would also send a message to the public at large that government is committed to healthy, non-polluting, human-powered transportation.
