IMPERIAL BEACH : Violations Charged at Naval Waste Site
State authorities on Monday accused a Navy facility in Imperial Beach of violating hazardous waste laws that could cost the Navy more than $50,000 in fines.
After an inspection in December, California authorities cited the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office for inadequate design of its hazardous waste storage area, storing hazardous waste for more than a year, a record-keeping violation and failing to post a warning sign.
The order requires the facility, which is administered by the North Island Naval Air Station, to fix the hazardous waste storage area and the other violations.
The facility is a clearing house for hazardous materials such as paint, lubricants and cleaning supplies from San Diego Navy facilities that are then disposed of, taken to other federal facilities, or sold to the public.
