Countrywide Funding Corp., the nation’s largest independent mortgage broker, will transfer more than 400 employees this year from its Pasadena headquarters to an office building in Simi Valley, company and city officials said Monday.

The company has acquired the former Gibraltar Savings building, a 290,000-square-foot facility north of the Simi Valley Freeway at 2800 Madera Road, officials said. The site will house Countrywide’s loan servicing divisions and portions of its data processing department.

Countrywide, founded in 1969, originates and services single-family loans up to $1 million locally. The firm has retail and wholesale branches in more than 100 cities nationwide. Company officials said Countrywide originated $12 billion in mortgage loans last year.

Beyond the initial transfer of employees, Countrywide plans to provide several thousand job opportunities at the Simi Valley site over the next eight years, city officials said.

In a written statement, Mayor Greg Stratton called the company “a fitting addition to the city of Simi Valley.”
