A 2-year-old boy was fatally injured Monday afternoon when he apparently fell off his tricycle and hit his head, police said.

Anthony Machalek of Huntington Beach was taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:10 p.m., about 1 1/2 hours after the accident, said Orange County deputy coroner Pat Lorey.

Police said the youngster was riding his Big Wheel tricycle around the concrete patio at his baby-sitter’s home in the 9200 block of Albacore Drive.

Anthony, along with four other young children, were under the care of baby-sitter Penelope Taylor, 49, said Police Sgt. Bill Van Cleve.

Taylor apparently got a phone call shortly after 3:30 p.m. and went inside to answer it. When she came out, she saw the 2-year-old lying on the ground, Van Cleve said.

Police are investigating the case as an accidental death, Van Cleve said.

An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death, Lorey said.
