NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Glavine Rebounds by Shutting Out Cubs on Two Hits
Tom Glavine hoped his start against the Chicago Cubs would be better than his last outing.
It was.
Glavine pitched his second two-hitter of the season as the Atlanta Braves beat the Cubs, 5-0, Monday night at Atlanta for their third consecutive victory.
In his previous start, Glavine suffered his first loss of the season when the San Diego Padres battered him for 11 hits and six runs in four innings in a 9-4 loss.
“I was a little better than the other day,” Glavine said. “I told myself the test will be how I bounce back. I think I bounced back pretty good.”
Shawon Dunston lined a clean single to left field on the first pitch of the sixth inning to break up the no-hit bid by Glavine (3-1). Ryne Sandberg grounded a single to left to open the seventh for the other Chicago hit. Glavine struck out six and walked one en route to the seventh shutout of his career.
“After the fifth inning, I thought it might be a good night for him to throw one of those no-no’s,” Brave catcher Greg Olson said. “It didn’t work out, but he deserved another of his two-hit shutouts.”
Glavine stopped the Houston Astros, 2-0, on two hits in the Braves’ season-opener.
Ron Gant had a solo homer and a run-scoring single against loser Shawn Boskie (3-1).
Greg Olson drove in Atlanta’s first run in a two-run second inning with a double. He took third when center fielder Sammy Sosa bobbled the ball and scored on Belliard’s grounder.
San Francisco 2, Montreal 1--Dave Burba pitched six shutout innings for his first National League victory as the Giants beat the Expos at San Francisco.
The Giants scored two fourth-inning runs against Dennis Martinez (1-4), who lost his third straight start despite giving up only six hits in seven innings. The Expos, who are 0-10 in night games, have scored a total of three runs in Martinez’s four losses.
Burba (1-2) gave up five hits before Mike Jackson relieved to start the seventh.
Philadelphia 12, San Diego 9--Dave Hollins had a career-high five RBIs with a two-run homer and a three-run triple in leading the Phillies at San Diego.
The Phillies recorded their first victory ever against Bruce Hurst (1-2), who entered the game with a 5-0 mark in eight starts against them. He was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Although the Phillies’ Terry Mulholland was handed a 7-0 lead, he remained at 0-3 in five starts. He was chased in the fifth inning with the Padres in the middle of a five-run rally.
