Shoup to Coach Football at Santa Paula

Rick Shoup, an assistant at Thousand Oaks High, has been selected football coach at Santa Paula. Shoup, 34, replaces Mike Tsoutsouvas, who coached the Cardinals for seven seasons.

Shoup, the son of retired Cal Lutheran Coach Bob Shoup, played wide receiver at Cal Lutheran from 1976-79. He was a football assistant at Cal Lutheran and a baseball assistant at Chaminade before joining the Thousand Oaks staff in 1990.

Last season, Santa Paula was 5-6, 2-2 in the Frontier League.

Western State Conference champion Moorpark College will open play in the Southern California regional softball tournament today against Grossmont at Cypress College at 2 p.m.

Moorpark (29-10) is seeded fifth in the 16-team bracket and Grossmont (18-12) is seeded 12th. A total of eight double-elimination regionals statewide will run through Saturday with the winners advancing to the state championship tournament May 15-17 in Sacramento.

Canyons (11-13), the second-place finisher in the Western State Conference, is seeded 14th and will play No. 3 Long Beach City (35-12) at noon at Long Beach City.

Matt Carpenter, a 6-foot-8 center at Crespi, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. Hofstra, an NCAA Division I school, is coached by Butch van Breda Kolff, a former Laker coach.

Carpenter averaged 9.0 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Celts.

He is the third member of the family to earn a Division I scholarship. His oldest brother Mike played football at Houston and John was an offensive lineman at Stanford. All three attended Crespi.

College of the Canyons’ David Langley, the Western State Conference most valuable basketball player, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Quincy (Ill.) College.

Langley, a 6-2, 175-pound guard who did not play high school basketball, averaged 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists a game last season.

Mike Sweeney, an All-Mission League defensive back last fall at Chaminade High, has agreed to play next season at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Sweeney (6-2, 185), who also played receiver, transferred to Taft in the spring and is a starting outfielder for the Toreador baseball team.

Cal Poly SLO, an NCAA Division II school, competes in the Western Football Conference.

The South Seas Volleyball Club has scheduled tryouts Monday at Taft High for high school age male players. Boys 14-16 will try out from 6-7:30 p.m. and 18-year-olds will meet from 7:30-9 p.m.

The club season runs from mid-May to June. The club lists among its coaches Doug Magorien of Taft, Dave Rubio of Arizona and Gary Reznick, a setter at Cal State Northridge.
