A Need for the Arts

It disturbs me greatly that the schools in San Diego city and county do not include a reasonable amount of the fine arts (music, art and drama) in the curriculum for all students. As a former public school music teacher, I am convinced that we are cheating our children.

The study of music broadens the horizons of all its students--poor and rich alike. It uses the creative and the logical sides of the brain and assists greatly in the solving of life’s problems. It has been proven that students who study the arts have fuller lives in terms of joy and accomplishments and are less apt to get into trouble.

The Community Council for Music in the Schools has worked diligently to increase the amount of qualified music instruction that our children receive, and I applaud it for that.
