Downey : City Will Pay to Replace 200 Water Fountains at Schools
The Downey City Council voted Tuesday to spend $200,000 in federal grant money to replace more than 200 antiquated drinking fountains at schools throughout the Downey Unified School District. The money also will pay for new fire alarms at two elementary schools.
The City Council decided to help out the financially strapped school district after hearing pleas from several school board members.
The new water fountains, which will be accessible to the handicapped, will cost about $140,000. The aging fire alarms at Gauldin and Gallatin elementary schools will be replaced at a cost of $60,000, officials said.
