Volunteer counselors, manning phone banks typically used for membership drives at KCET-Channel 28, began fielding calls Wednesday from residents suffering emotionally and psychologically from the recent riots.

Counselors from the UCLA School of Social Welfare and other universities and social agencies will provide the free counseling--in English, Spanish and Korean--through May 25, according to a KCET spokeswoman. The public television station’s 100-line phone bank can be reached by dialing (213) 669-5000.

The service is available today from 6 to 10 p.m. It is also scheduled to be available Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 6 to 10 p.m.; Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon and 8 to 11 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
