Track notes: With Orange County and Orange League championships already safely tucked away in its trophy case, the Valencia boys’ track and field team now turns its attention to winning the Southern Section 2-A title. The 2-A preliminaries begin at 4 p.m. Friday at Trabuco Hills High, with the finals scheduled next week at Cerritos College.

Mike Cummins has announced that he is retiring after 30 seasons as Valencia coach, and his talented sprinting corps could make him a winner in his final section championship meet.

The Tigers are led by brothers Kevin and Korey Alexander, who rank as Orange County’s fastest and, perhaps more important, most consistent sprinters this season. Kevin won the Orange League 100 and 200 meters, and Korey was second in each race last week. Kevin ran 10.80 seconds and 21.42; Korey ran 10.90 and 21.92.

At the county championships last month, Kevin anchored Valencia to a school-record 42.48 in winning the 400-meter relay. The Tigers also finished second in the 1,600-meter relay, running 3:20.57.

Valencia also hopes to get points from Ace Riggins in the long jump.

Other section prelims will be held Saturday at various sites.

The 4-A, which beings at noon at UC Riverside, will feature Mission Viejo sprinter Andrea Dean and long jumper Heather Sterlin.

The 3-A (noon at Trabuco Hills) features middle-distance runners Shelley Taylor of Edison and Christie Engesser of Ocean View and hurdlers Charlie Davidson of Saddleback, Greg Muniz of Woodbridge and Elinor Tolson of Fountain Valley. Newport Harbor’s shotput and discus duo of Tony Mancuso and Gina Heads also will compete.
