Gala Nets $1.5 Million for SHARE

SHARE (Share Happily and Reap Endlessly) raised more than $1.5 million--$500,000 more than last year--at its 39th annual Boomtown Party May 9 at CBS/MTM Studios. The gala will benefit services for children and others in need. SHARE has helped such organizations as ERAS Center, Exceptional Children’s Foundation, Hathaway Children’s Services, Pediatric AIDS Foundation, sheltered workshops for the older retarded, recreational programs, and a residential home and art center for the gifted retarded. Rosemary Stack was Boomtown chair, Marilyn Katleman party chair and Corinna Fields is chairman of the board. Pam Korman is SHARE president.

National Conference of Christians and Jews held its 20th annual Real Estate and Construction Industries Humanitarian Awards dinner May 6 at the Beverly Hilton. The gala netted $90,000 to be used to continue community relations seminars and workshops and to promote a positive atmosphere in police-community relations. Peter Ueberroth, leader of the “Rebuild L.A.” task force, spoke. Stanley Moore was dinner chair.

Portals Mental Health Rehabilitation Agency netted $90,000 at its gala May 9 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Steve Allen was honorary chair. Peter Gold served as dinner chair.

Options House, a nonprofit program for homeless teen-agers, will open a long-term shelter in Hollywood later this year, thanks to the April 28 “Hats Off to Options House” benefit co-hosted by country music star Marty Stuart and KZLA-FM morning deejay Ken Cooper. The event, held at the Pickwick Entertainment Center in Burbank, included bowling with celebrities, dancing and an auction. It raised more than $50,000. Options House works to reunite teens with their families, helps teens with housing in foster and group homes, and assists in providing independent living arrangements.

“Workout for Hope,” a national aerobic workout benefiting AIDS research at the City of Hope National Medical Center, raised $1 million April 11 in 58 cities. Fitness buffs in Southern California worked out at UCLA’s Ackerman Union and at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.
