Ysidro Orozco, 19, identified by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies as a parolee in an assault with a deadly weapon case, was shot five times and critically wounded by deputies in a residential area of Compton on Monday afternoon.

A sheriff’s spokesman said Orozco had refused to drop a loaded .22-caliber pistol that was recovered at the scene, prompting two deputies to fire on him from close range.

Four youths identifying themselves as members of the Compton Varrio Tres gang, known as CV-3, said they witnessed the incident and that Orozco, who they said was a fellow gang member, did not have a gun. They said he had been fleeing deputies because warrants were out for his arrest and had put his hands up in the air on the deputies’ command.

Sheriff’s spokesman Robert Stoneman said investigators would talk with anybody who had seen the incident and that conflicts would be reviewed by the district attorney’s office.
