Right-hander Bobby Cowan of Saugus High fell one win shy of equaling Roger Salkeld’s school record of 13 victories in a season, losing his final two decisions to finish 12-2. Cowan, recently selected as the Golden League’s most valuable player, was the losing pitcher Friday when Saugus was eliminated by Apple Valley, 6-5, in the opening round of the Southern Section 3-A Division baseball playoffs.

Still, Cowan, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior, posted impressive numbers and promises to be among the region’s best pitchers next season.

Cowan had 85 strikeouts and 29 walks with a 1.69 earned-run average in 78 1/3 innings. He made 18 appearances and logged five complete games. Cowan was 9-0 in league play.

Montclair Prep’s final season in the Alpha League will not be remembered for pitching. Eight of the Mounties’ nine starters batted better than .400 in league play, with Justin Paperny (.600) and Brad Fullmer (.556) leading the way.

Montclair Prep outscored its opponents, 138-22, but the Mounties were not the only hot-hitting Alpha team. Village Christian and L.A. Baptist batted better than .300. Brad Imbler of L.A. Baptist batted .528 and Village Christian’s Jason Robitaille, a freshman pitcher, batted .423.

Miscellaneous: Poly has lost only four of its past 51 Valley Pac-8 Conference baseball games over the past three years.

Softball: Entering Tuesday’s 4-A playoff game against Santa Monica, Hart’s Jamie Dean had 187 hits in her career, which ranks second in Southern Section history. Dean was 19 hits behind record-holder Julie Smith (1982-86) of Charter Oak. Dean, a senior second baseman, has signed a letter of intent to play at Hawaii next year.

Track and field: Six athletes from the area successfully defended their titles in the Southern Section divisional championships at Cerritos College on Saturday. They were Jesse Stern of Harvard-Westlake (1-A pole vault) in the boys’ meet, and Nada Kawar of Crescenta Valley (4-A shotput), Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks (3-A 100- and 200-meter dashes), Crystal Brownlee of Westlake (3-A shotput), Nikki Shaw of Fillmore (1-A 800 and 1,600) and Harthenia Mansell of Oak Park (1-A discus) in the girls’ competition. It was the third consecutive double for Jones, who previously won titles for Rio Mesa.

Jones has been a member of the past three girls’ 3-A championship teams. She led Rio Mesa to titles in 1990 and ‘91; Thousand Oaks won Saturday.
