A 57-year-old man was pinned between two cars Sunday when a driverless automobile rolled backward and struck him while he was tinkering with his car.

Pedro Pablo Trujillo Behena of Anaheim was listed in critical condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange, police said.

Police said the accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. in an alley in the 600 block of North Olive Street, when Gabriel Nunez, 32, standing outside of his car, reached into it and started the engine.

“The vehicle began to back quickly,” said Anaheim Lt. Ray Welch. “Nunez attempted to stop it” but was unable to.

The car continued backward for some distance and struck Behena who was crouching behind his car, working on a bumper, Welch said. Nunez and nearby witnesses were able to push Nunez’s car and free Behena who was taken by ambulance to the hospital, he added.

Nunez was not cited, and the accident is still under investigation.
