Senna Ends Mansell’s Streak at Five
Nigel Mansell’s streak of Formula One success ended at five races Sunday in the Monaco Grand Prix. He was the victim of a punctured tire, and Ayrton Senna won the race at Monte Carlo by 0.215 of a second.
Mansell had won all of the Formula One races held this year and had control of this one until the seven laps remained, when his Williams-Renault was forced into the pits for a tire change.
That gave Senna--driving a McLaren-Honda--the lead, and he held off a final charge by Mansell, who has never won at Monte Carlo.
Mansell was 28.8 seconds ahead at the time.
Senna’s winning time was a record 1 hour 50 minutes 59.372 seconds on the 2.068-mile course. The previous best was 1:52:46.392 by Senna in 1990.
