PLACENTIA : Council to Consider Trash Fee Increase

A proposed increase in trash and recycling fees will be considered by the City Council tonight.

Residents face a 4.8% increase, from $11.43 to $11.98 a month, effective July 1, said city director of finance Howard Longballa. The proposed increase would follow a hike of $1.44 per month that was approved last year.

Longballa said the proposed increase is lower this year because county landfills, under pressure from municipalities to keep gate fees down, are not proposing an increase in fees.

Businesses could see a greater increase in their fees. A typical business using standard containers will pay $85 a month, up from nearly $78 a month. Longballa said the increase reflects the cost of instituting a recycling program for commercial containers.

Other action the council is expected to take tonight includes setting a public hearing for the city budget and hearing public comments on a proposed amendment to the municipal code on obtaining use permits.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, Chapman and Kraemer avenues.
