Greiner Awarded $2-Million Project

The local office of Greiner Engineering Inc. said Friday that it has been awarded a $2-million contract to design and oversee construction of an enlarged runway system at the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport.

Design and construction of the airport’s holding apron and resurfacing of its runway and service roads could be completed by the end of the year, said Jim Hawley, project manager in Greiner’s Santa Ana office.

A holding apron is an area where airliners await takeoff permission. The contract also includes building a “blast fence,” which protects cars traveling along service roads near runways.

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena project is similar to one that Greiner, based in Irving, Tex., is handling for Orange County’s John Wayne Airport. The John Wayne project also involves strengthening the runway for larger airliners, such as the Boeing 767.
