Gates became a deputy sheriff in 1961, but in his spare time since he has earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. . . . Now Gates is in the final stages of his doctorate in government from Claremont College. Though not currently enrolled, Gates stated in a recent deposition that he’s only a couple of thesis papers short.
