Scholarships Given to 43 Fullerton College Students

A total of 43 Fullerton College psychology, anthropology and sociology students won scholarships ranging from $50 to $300.

Special memorial scholarships were won by Travis M. Noe, Hacienda Heights; Steven B. Robertson, Brea, and Kevin D. McIntosh, Fullerton.

Peg Tompkins received a studies scholarship, and an intercultural award was presented to Melanie Paiste, both of Yorba Linda.

Winning memorial scholarships named for former instructors Shailer Arnold and Philip Le Ross were Sherry A. Aubin and Jere B. Reener, both of Anaheim; Holly L. Fazio, Buena Park; Sebastian E. Hegenbart, Costa Mesa; Steven L. Tower, Rena M. Shahandah, Richard P. Van Zandt, Sunbie L. Cornick, Susan T. Ahn, all of Fullerton; Joseph J. Hong and Jennifer R. Nieman, both of La Mirada; Karen M. Kane and Linda A. Guyon, both of Orange, and Jason Y. Hou, Yorba Linda.

Other award winners were Leticia Recio, Anaheim; Kerry L. Smith, Moti D. Trani, Anna Cha and Rosalie I. Ferencik, all of Brea; Julie A. Ferguson, Bridgette I. Martinez, Otto I. Pena, Daeleen M. Chesley, Irma N. McGrath, Michael P. Marshal, David A. Rick, Patricia W. Hughes and Anna M. Haraksin, all of Fullerton.

They also included Kyle R. Samudio and Denise A. Yezhaks, both of La Mirada; Rosalie M. Frederickson, Pomona; Sherry L. Gordon, Kacie M. DuCoing and Jennifer L. Darnell, all of Whittier; Veronica L. Lui, Jennifer M. Clark and Laura M. Jones, all of Yorba Linda, and Brian M. Wilson, Placentia.

Mezzo soprano Carter Scott of Tustin and tenor Matthew Bitetti of Los Angeles, both singers from the Overture Company of Opera Pacific in Costa Mesa, won top honors in the annual vocal competition sponsored by American Educators of Italian Origin United.

The pair bested a field of 22 Southern California singers to win $750 each.

AEIOU’s aim is to discover, foster and showcase new talent.

Dr. David M. Stone, a plastic surgeon from La Habra, has been named a fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Lt. Robert A. Fauteux of Villa Park, a graduate of UC Irvine, has been selected to attend the EURO-NATO joint jet-pilot training program at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.

He was one of 15 pilots selected from an estimated 320 candidates that included pilots from other countries.

Fauteux received his commission through the Air Force ROTC program.

Patricia Bain Machado, former assistant principal at Willard Intermediate School in Santa Ana, has been named assistant principal of curriculum at Santa Ana High School. She is a 17-year resident of Tustin.

Costa Mesa resident Carla DeSantis, 22, was the first-place winner of the illustration award at the recent eighth annual Fashion Careers Symposium in San Francisco. The event was sponsored by the California Community Colleges.

She submitted a collection of three drawings representing her designs for a mythical Broadway musical.

DeSantis, an Orange Coast College student, won $150. An estimated 500 students from 81 community colleges took part in the competition.

Elizabeth Hawkins, daughter of Diane and John Hawkins of Villa Park, and Laurie Graham, an Anaheim resident and Cal State Long Beach graduate, have been selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Hawkins, a former Esperanza High School student, will graduate from UCLA in June and study law at Yale University in the fall.

Gi Ban, an 11-year-old fifth-grader at Stanford Elementary School in Garden Grove, recorded a near perfect 99 out of 100 points to become the individual champion in the Pen and Quill penmanship contest hosted by the Orange County Department of Education. The contest attracted 80 participants from 26 schools.

Orange Coast College students Mindy Pyle and Todd McDavitt were honored as male and female Students of the Year by the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce at a recent awards ceremony at the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel.

Walt Disney Elementary School teacher Sharon St. Clair of Newport Beach has been selected as one of 50 teachers nationwide to attend the National Gallery of Art Teacher Institute in Washington Aug. 10-15. She is a third- and fourth-grade mentor/teacher in the Magnolia School District.
