BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Scoring Angers Crews

Tim Crews was incensed Saturday that a grounder by Chris Sabo that bounced out of Lenny Harris’ glove in the sixth inning was ruled a hit.

If it had been an error, none of the six runs charged against Crews that inning would have been earned. Instead, they all were earned.

After he gave up seven earned runs in three innings, Crews’ earned-run average rose from 5.40 to 6.98. His blood pressure jumped at about the same pace.

“That was definitely an error. The scorer (Glenn Sample) should take another look at that. . . . We’re talking about ruining my career,” Crews said. “Lenny even told me he took his eye off the ball, that he had it in his glove and he lost it. That just ain’t right.”

The grounder loaded the bases with one out. Then Joe Oliver hit a double-play grounder that was dropped by Juan Samuel after getting the force at second, scoring one run.

Then Tim Belcher singled in a run, Bip Roberts doubled in a run, Dave Martinez tripled in two runs and Barry Larkin singled in a run.

Bob Ojeda’s return to the mound for his next start in Atlanta next week in still uncertain. He said his back felt better Saturday, but he will know more today when, if it feels good, he will attempt to throw. “I’m still saying I’ll be able to pitch,” said Ojeda, who was wearing a girdle to support the back. . . . Jim Gott’s recovery from his twisted ankle was so quick, he could have pitched Saturday. . . . Samuel and Jose Offerman were asked to explain their fielding problems. “We didn’t make the plays, there no excuse for what happened,” Samuel said calmly. Offerman said: “I don’t have nothing to say” before loudly cursing. . . . Mike Scioscia threw out two runners attempting to steal in a game for the first time this season. He has thrown out 10 of 55 runners, 18% success. . . . With his sixth-inning homer and 22nd run batted in, Eric Karros knocked Darryl Strawberry out of the team lead in RBIs. Strawberry had led, even though he hasn’t played in 29 days. . . . Jay Howell pitched a scoreless inning Saturday, giving him 7 2/3 scoreless innings in six appearances.
