Latino Film Series Will Begin Tonight

The city of Santa Monica Arts Division (SMARTS) is collaborating with the AFI Filmfest in presenting “Cine Latino,” a series of films ranging from suspense thriller to documentary and dealing with a variety of social issues.

Curated by the Santa Monica Latino Task Force with SMARTS, the series runs through July 2 at the Monica-4 Plex. There will be an opening reception tonight from 5:30 to 8:30 at the Gaucho Grill, 1251 3rd St. Promenade.

Wrong country--”Frontier,” a Chilean film, was incorrectly attributed to another country of origin in last Friday’s Calendar. It is scheduled to screen on Thursday at 4 and 9:15 p.m. at the Monica 4-Plex in Santa Monica.

* Today: “City of the Blind” (Mexico), 3:30 and 8:45 p.m.

* Saturday: Xuxa, the popular Brazilian singer, stars in “Super Xuxa Contra Baixo Astral,” a free family film showing at 11 a.m.; “Shoot to Kill” (Venezuela), 9 p.m.

* Sunday: A free screening of four U.S. Latino short films--Rogelio Lobato’s “The Addict,” Carlos Avila’s “Distant Water,” Don Matos’ “The Other Side” and Noel Quinones’ “The Bell”--followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers, 10:15 a.m.-1 p.m.; “Sao Paulo, SP” (The Netherlands), 8:45 p.m.

* Monday: “Hello Hemingway” (Cuba), 3:30 and 8:45 p.m.

* June 27: “Macario” (Mexico), the 1959 cinematography award winner at Cannes, a free screening at 10:30 a.m.; “Jerico” (Venezuela), 8:45 p.m.

* June 28: “Alias La Gringa” (Peru), 1 and 6:15 p.m.

* June 29: “Another Hope” (Argentina), 3:30 and 8:45 p.m.

* July 2: “The Frontier” (Cuba), 4 and 9:15 p.m.
