Countywide : Free Lunch Program for Youths Expands

A free lunch program for youths 18 years old and under has begun at several sites, and there are plans for several more.

More than 70,000 children throughout the county are expected to be served a meal during the weekday lunch hours this summer, surpassing last year’s total of 52,000, said Annette Jewell, a coordinator of the free lunch program administered by the Orange County Community Development Council.

“Any child who lives in the area where the meals are being served can receive a free lunch,” Jewell said. “You don’t have to sign up or anything.”

Each lunch consists of half a pint of milk, meat, bread and two or more fruits and vegetables. There are no second servings, and no one is allowed to take the food outside of the lunch grounds, Jewell said.

The program is funded by grants each year from sponsors in each area where free lunches are distributed.

“Last year we had seven sponsors, but this year we have 11 sponsors from all sections of Orange County,” Jewell said. “A number of school districts and parks are taking part in the program.”
