19th-Seeded Player an Upset Winner in Racquetball

Tim Sweeney won two matches, including an upset of third-seeded Mike Yellen to reach the quarterfinals of the VCI Pro-Am Racquetball Championships Thursday at Racquetball World in Fullerton and L.A. Fitness Center in Anaheim.

Sweeney, seeded 19th, began play with a 1-11, 11-9, 2-11, 11-8, 11-7 victory over No. 14 Aaron Katz, before eliminating Yellen, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7.

Second-seeded Tim Doyle of Fountain Valley won both of his matches. No. 9 Dave Johnson of Huntington Beach defeated Steve Lerner, 11-3, 11-0, 11-10 in a first-round match.

Brian Hawkes of Huntington Beach, an eight-time national outdoor champion, seeded 10th, lost a second-round match to Ruben Gonzalez, 11-2, 11-9, 10-11, 11-0.
