The Mission Conference and the Simple Green Orange County Bowl have stuck a deal assuring three conference teams of bowl bids.

The plan for the Dec. 5 game at Orange Coast College calls for a doubleheader involving the winners of the Northern, Central and Southern Divisions of the Mission Conference and a fourth team that could be a Mission Conference member.

The bowl, which started in 1981, has fluctuated between one and two games, often depending on last-minute decisions made to accommodate teams that failed to get other bowl bids.

Under the new format, which was proposed by OCC Athletic Director Barry Wallace, the Mission Conference team with the best record will play the best available opponent in the night game.

“We feel many of the best teams in the state are in the Mission Conference and that one of our teams ought to be in contention for a State title every season,” Wallace said. “Our goal in doing this is to make the main game a championship one every year.”

Job opening: The application deadline for the job of head football and golf coach at Fullerton closes today.

Sherbeck is leaving as the winningest community college coach in history with a mark of 241-71-8.

Moving on: Orange Coast pitching standout Alisha Nelson has signed a letter of intent to play softball at the University of Iowa next season. Nelson, a sophomore from Woodbridge High School, set the OCC career victory mark at 46 and the career earned-run average record at 0.65. She had a mark of 46-16 in her two seasons and helped the Pirates to consecutive appearances in the State tournament.
