Orange County Hall of Fame Elects Four : Honored: Ferragamo, DeCinces, Busby and Carmichael will be inducted during an Oct. 27 ceremony.

Steve Busby, who threw two no-hitters in the major leagues; Santa Ana College and USC running back Al Carmichael; Angel third baseman Doug DeCinces, and Ram quarterback Vince Ferragamo have been elected to the Orange County Hall of Fame.

The four, who will be inducted Oct. 27 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, bring the membership of the local Hall of Fame to 61.

Busby, a right-hander from Fullerton High and USC, posted a 70-54 mark between 1972-80 for the Kansas City Royals before shoulder problems ended his career. Both of Busby’s no-hitters were on the road--3-0 over Detroit on April 27, 1973, and 2-0 over Milwaukee on June 19, 1974.

Busby put together outstanding back-to-back seasons in 1974-75 when he posted 22-14 and 18-12 records. He struck out 198 and had a 3.39 earned-run average while completing 20 games in ’74. He dropped his ERA to 3.08 in ‘75, struck out 160 and had 18 complete games.

Carmichael, the only one selected in the veteran category (achievements before 1965), led Santa Ana College to the Junior Rose Bowl in 1949 by rushing for 1,026 yards and scoring 19 touchdowns. He went on to USC and played three seasons, averaging 4.41 yards per carry and scoring the Jan. 1, 1953, Rose Bowl’s only touchdown on a 22-yard pass from Rudy Bukich in the fifth-ranked Trojans’ 7-0 victory over Wisconsin.

Carmichael played six seasons (1953-58) in the NFL with Green Bay and two (1960-61) in the AFL with Denver. He established an NFL kickoff-return record, which has since been tied twice, on Oct. 7, 1956, when he returned one 106 yards against the Chicago Bears.

DeCinces came to the Angels in 1982 after nine years with the Baltimore Orioles. His six-year Angel career was highlighted by a .301 average, 30 home runs and 97 RBIs in his first season in Anaheim, two Western Division titles (’82 and ‘86) and two divisional second-place finishes (‘84-’85).

DeCinces, as well-known for his fielding as his hitting, holds two all-time Angel club records--77 extra-base hits and 749 games played at third base.

Ferragamo, out of the University of Nebraska, played seven seasons for the Rams and led them to their only Super Bowl appearance on Jan. 20, 1980, against Pittsburgh. Ferragamo completed 15 of 25 passes for 212 yards, but the Steelers won, 31-19.

He enjoyed his greatest day as a pro on Dec. 26, 1982, when he threw for 509 yards--fourth most in NFL history--while completing 30 of 45 passes against the Chicago Bears.
