Tire Blaze Burns Through Night Before Being Brought Under Control
A fire in a half-acre Boyle Heights yard filled with tires was brought under control Sunday morning after burning through the night, county fire officials said.
The blaze, possibly started by illegal fireworks, began about 10 p.m. Saturday, said Los Angeles County fire dispatcher Tim O’Donnell. Minutes after fire units arrived, the blaze gutted a small building, a Fire Department spokesman said. Other structures near Indiana Avenue and Medford Street were threatened, he said.
Fifteen fire units had been called to the scene by 11 p.m., and Los Angeles police were summoned to keep autos out of the area.
The blaze was declared under control at 8:34 a.m. Sunday, but at least nine fire engines and crews remained through the day to make sure it was out, officials said. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and returned to work, they said.
