District Weighs Plan to Sell Tweedy School
Los Angeles Unified School District officials are considering selling the former Tweedy Elementary School because of environmental problems, a district spokesman said this week.
The Los Angeles Board of Education on Aug. 3 will hear a recommendation by the district’s real estate director, Bob Niccum, to sell the school, the spokesman said. Niccum has recommended a minimum bid of $1.3 million for the three-acre property at 5115 Southern Ave.
Environmental pollutants have been a concern at Tweedy since the mid-1980s because the school is surrounded by industry.
The school district, facing strong public pressure, closed the school in 1988. But in 1989, the district opened offices at Tweedy and assigned about 20 full-time employees to work there.
