He’s Back! Matthew Garbutt, who was San Diego Symphony’s assistant conductor between 1980-85 and resident conductor of the San Diego Symphony Pops from 1983-1987, is back on the podium tonight through Sunday at Embarcadero Marina Park South. Garbutt, who is also the orchestra’s principal tuba, was drafted at the last moment when the SummerPops’ previously scheduled Bo Ayars canceled for medical reasons. Garbutt’s potpourri of classic Beatles tunes replace Ayars’ avalanche of Las Vegas show tunes. Since Garbutt was relieved of his local conducting duties and returned to the orchestra’s brass section in 1987, he has regularly conducted the San Jose Symphony and has made two guest appearances with the Korea Philharmonic.
