Classic Wood Sailing Ships to Compete in Annual Race

More than 30 classic wood sailing ships will converge on Channel Islands Harbor on Saturday for the Corinthian Classic Yacht Race, an annual event that attracts ships from as far away as San Diego, race officials said.

“It’s more of a parade of old boats than a race,” said Dick McNish, race coordinator.

Sloops, yawls and schooners ranging from 17 to 60 feet in length will compete in the 15-year-old event, which is sponsored by Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club in Oxnard. The only requirements for entering, McNish said, is that the boat be at least 40 years old and made of wood.

The old sailing ships will sail west from Channel Islands Harbor toward a small oil-rig island, turn north to the mouth of Ventura Harbor, then tack around the harbor buoy and head back to the starting point. Most boats should make it back by 4 p.m., McNish said.

While the race is competitive, skippers with basic skills can take part, McNish said. The entrance fee is $20.

The race begins with a 9 a.m. skipper’s meeting at the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club. Start time is noon.
