ANTELOPE VALLEY : Brummel Ouster Linked to Shortfall
The departing superintendent of the Antelope Valley Union High School District breached his four-year employment contract by failing to halt the district’s slide into a projected $13-million budget shortfall, district officials contended in a document released Thursday.
The accusation, representing the district’s strongest public indictment of Supt. Kenneth Brummel, was contained in the agreement under which he will retire Jan. 2--2 1/2 years before the end of his contract--in exchange for a $100,000 payment from the district.
The district also agreed to pay Brummel, 57, for 44 days of accrued vacation time worth about $14,000 and to pay for his health insurance until he gets another job or turns 65, both standard provisions. Brummel, who is now on paid medical leave, agreed not to sue the district.
