Fred Barnett, who led the Philadelphia Eagles in receiving yards last season, will miss up to a month because of a separated left shoulder.

Barnett suffered the injury diving for a pass during a practice drill. He is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 6 against New Orleans.

Kenneth Sims, the first pick overall in the 1982 draft with the New England Patriots who was attempting a comeback after two years away from football, was waived by the Buffalo Bills.

Quarterback Joe Montana, his return from an elbow injury delayed because of recurring soreness, left the San Francisco 49ers training camp to consult Los Angeles orthopedic specialist Dr. Frank Jobe.

Coach George Seifert said there is a chance Montana’s backup, Steve Young, will be held out of Saturday night’s exhibition game against the Raiders because of stiffness in his lower back.

Veteran lineman Jim Jeffcoat ended his holdout with the Dallas Cowboys, leaving the team with six unsigned veterans.
