Duarte : Assessment to Fund Center

Taxes from the city’s landscape and lighting maintenance district will be used to build a senior citizens’ center.

The City Council on Tuesday authorized the use of $125,000 for a center. Since 1978, money raised through the assessment district has been used solely for maintenance.

Mayor Ginny Joyce rebutted objections by two speakers that the public was not properly informed of the change in policy, saying she has been discussing the change with constituents. Staff reports indicate that $125,000 is set aside in the 1992-93 city budget for development of the senior center. This figure is based on changes in the way taxes are assessed to apartments and trailer parks and does not reflect a citywide tax increase.

The city has been considering building the senior center on Huntington Drive just east of City Hall, but a final decision has not been made.
