Crowned queen of the Ventura County Fair Queen Pageant, Ashley B. Basquin of Port Hueneme will preside over the fair and act as a judge in various events.

Ashley, 17, who did a rendition of “Wind Beneath My Wings” in sign language at the pageant, won a $500 prize and a tiara, said Teresa Raley, publicist for the fair, which runs from Aug. 19 to Aug. 30.

“It means a lot,” Ashley said. “I’m really excited. It will give me the opportunity to show the community how much I love it.”

Chosen from among nine entrants, Ashley graduated from Moorpark High School this year with a 4.0 grade-point average.

A member of the National Honor Society, she plans to study communications at Pepperdine University this fall.

She and the other entrants were judged by a five-member panel in categories such as community service, communication skills, talent, poise, academic achievement and personality.

The first runner-up was Sonya G. Wang, 16, of Camarillo, who performed two Asian dances, one with fans and one with ribbons. She won $300.

Rebecca J. Seebirt, 16, of Ojai earned the ranking of second runner-up and a $150 prize. To show her talent, she performed a gymnastics floor routine.
