From Staff and Wire Reports

The New York Islanders broke up a front office that ran the team for all of its 20 years in the NHL Monday, as a new ownership group swept out Bill Torrey as general manager and brought Bryan Trottier back into the organization.

Torrey, the first employee hired when the team was formed, and its only general manager, was replaced by Don Maloney, his assistant last season.

Torrey’s power as chairman of the board was assumed by the new owners, who completed their purchase of control from majority owner John O. Pickett earlier this month. Jerome Grossman will serve as president and chief operating officer, responsible for the club’s day-to-day operations, with Trottier, the team’s all-time leading scorer, as his executive assistant.

Trottier, released by the Islanders two years ago, has played the last two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
