Continental Sets Fare Hikes: The airline said it will increase fares 5% as scheduled Sept. 1, but it will limit the hikes to markets where American Airlines does not compete. Continental said the unevenness in nationwide pricing is preferable to matching American’s April 9 fare structure. Continental said American’s “value pricing” plan puts predatory pressure on competitors. It and other airlines are pursuing antitrust litigation against American on these and other grounds.
